On November 29, 2024, the 3rd Seminar of the Society of Plant Breeders and Seed Producers of the Republic of Serbia, titled “Quality Control,” was held at the premises of the Tamish Research and Development Institute in Pančevo. The seminar was organized by the Society of Plant Breeders and Seed Producers in cooperation with the Tamish Research and Development Institute as a co-organizer.
The seminar brought together seed laboratory staff, experts, and researchers in the field of seed production, with the aim of improving knowledge and skills in implementing seed quality control, particularly in the application of standards and procedures in seed laboratories.
The seminar was opened by Dr. Vojka Babić, Secretary General of the Society, who emphasized the importance of such educational events in strengthening the capacities of seed laboratories, as well as the seed sector in general.
Dr. Svetlana Roljević Nikolić, Director of the Tamish Research and Development Institute in Pančevo, welcomed the participants on behalf of the co-organizer and expressed her satisfaction that the Institute had the opportunity to host such an important event. She highlighted the importance of cooperation between science and practice in improving the quality of seed testing, which could further be reflected through similar educational activities and participation in joint projects in the future.
Dr. Jelena Damnjanović from the Tamish Research and Development Institute in Pančevo led the theoretical and practical training activities for laboratory staff, contributing to the successful implementation of the seminar.
The lecturer at the seminar was Dr. Dragana Branković Radojčić from the Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje,” who presented the planned thematic units in an engaging and accessible manner. The topics included procedures for quality control of consumables and equipment, as well as training and supervision of personnel in seed testing laboratories.
As part of the seminar program, Dr. Jelena Lević presented the book “Taxonomy and Diversity of Seed Microbiota,” authored by Jelena T. Lević and Vojsilav R. Trkulja. The book represents a significant scientific work based on decades of experience and research in the fields of seed science and plant pathology.
In addition to the theoretical part, the seminar also included a practical component organized through work in smaller groups, where participants had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a laboratory setting.
After the completion of testing, the seminar concluded with the awarding of certificates to the participants.
This event provided an excellent opportunity to connect professional and scientific institutions, with the aim of improving existing knowledge and practices in the field of seed quality control, as well as laying the foundation for future cooperation.
